Graham Oliver introduces Ian Williams, owner of Relish Cafe, Elizabeth Street Waikanae

First meeting of 2021

A new caterer

Ian Williams from Relish Cafe introduced himself to the members and noted he
owned and ran Weston House in Levin and hosted the Levin Rotary Club there.

Ian is open to comments from the members and he asked for members to note their favourite meals in a book so that he could provide the variety of meals important for us.  We got off to a good start, with pork fillet, lovely sauce, cheesy broccoli, carrots and roasted pumpkin and potatoes.

Notices

Graham Oliver advised that members needed to apologise to him by 5pm Monday, otherwise you would be charged for the meal.

Brent Bohanna asked members to pay for all three meals in February in advance, as he will be away for the whole of February.  An invoice will go out for the meals and the 6 monthly subscriptions due at the same time.

Summer stories

A number of members recounted their Christmas holiday stories.

Of special note was Rodger McCormack's top 10 finish at the national dog trials in Taupo last weekend.  Well done Rodger...you must have a very smart dog!

Next meeting

The next meeting (28 January) will be spent on club matters and project update.

Parting Thought

President Robert read from a novel "This Farming Life" by Tim Saunders.

"Dad and I stood on the riverbank, sheep and cattle scattered haphazardly over the paddocks below us. The Oroua River trickled behind our vantage point, its meandering channel marked the eastern boundary of the farm. The westerly that stirred Dad’s wild hair glistened with salt from the not-to-distant Tasman Sea.

Straight fences criss-crossed the land, freshly mown hay the colour of buttered toast dried in rows, silhouettes of shelterbelt trees threw shadows that competed for space on the naked skyline. I turned to Dad, his grey eyes stared out at the farm he had lived on for all his 80 years. Deep chasms furrowed his face, tributaries of personal history chiseled into his skin like a braided river."
