Duties

Members rostered on will perform all these duties:

Open meeting with Grace / Message; Sergeant; Introduce & Thank Speaker (if there's a speaker); Parting Thought.

  • 29 September: Richard Campbell
  • 06 October: No meeting
The speaker tonight was Bryan Keen, a Senior Technician in the Materials Team at BRANZ.

BRANZ is not a government organisation, they don't set building standards and they are not a regulator.

BRANZ is an independent research organisation that uses an impartial evidence-based approach to improving the performance of the New Zealand building system. They transform insightful research into trusted, accessible, and actionable knowledge.

The BRANZ vision is "Challenging Aotearoa NZ to create a building system that delivers better outcomes for all."

Bryan first worked for BRANZ from 1994 to 2011, and then again from 2016.  He loves working there.

The BRANZ campus is located at Judgeford.

Bryan described a particular project that he was involved with that was aimed at testing the durability of generic plastic materials.  Sites were located across both islands, and he tested the plastics annually after being exposed to NZ conditions, especially the sun, for tensile strength and loss of colour.  The purpose of this research was to index the service life of commonly used plastics with respect to latitude. The outcomes of this work provided guidance about longevity to interested parties within the building industry.

There were many questions from members and David Bruce thanked Bryan on behalf of the club.

"When you've worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity...you do not slam it shut behind you...you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed."
