The meeting

Members and partners were treated to an address by Gillian Jones, District Governor 2020-21.

Gillian is a strong believer in change as is Rotary International President Holger Knaack.  They both believe that clubs need to change to survive and be relevant in this day and age.

DG Gillian told us that she believed Waikanae was unique in the District.  She believes we are the only club that doesn't have any female members.

Gillian remined us that this year is the 100th year of Rotary in New Zealand and Australia.  The clubs of Wellington and Auckland and Sydney and Melbourne were established in 1920.  She told us of a number of centenary projects including a vaccination project focused on the South Pacific. Click here to see more about these centenary projects

Gillian met with the Board prior to the dinner and enjoyed hearing about the club projects.  She suggested we needed to focus on building a diverse membership base.  She also believed we should engage with the community and find out what the community feels Rotary could do to help in this COVID world.

Gillian believes her year as DG will be successful if there are more members in the District than when she took over.

Gillian and partner Kevin said they very much enjoyed our hospitality and the opportunity to find out more about our club.

Parting Thought

President Robert has a number of messages [Bring on] Level 1, Level 1, Level 1.  but also quoted the Dalai Lama -

"Blessing must arise from within your own mind. It is not something that comes from outside. When the positive qualities of your mind increase and the negativities decrease, that is what blessing means. The Tibetan word for blessing … means transforming into magnificent potential. Therefore, blessing refers to the development of virtuous qualities you did not previously have and the improvement of those good qualities you have already developed. It also means decreasing the defilements of the mind that obstruct the generation of wholesome qualities. So actual blessing is received when the minds virtuous attributes gain strength and its defective characteristics weaken or deteriorate."
